Entering the Modern Age!
I finally decided it was time to replace out old top load washer and dryer set. We’ve had them over 13 years. The washer has been through a couple of repairs and the dryer is sounding…. baaaaaad! I started doing research, including subscribing to Consumer Reports online. My intention was to just have the info ready and then wait for either a good sale or for one or the other of the pieces to die. Well….. once I started seeing all the benefits (most especially the water and energy savings) I decided sooner was better than later! The above picture is an advertisement picture… my laundry room isn’t that big! I did order the pedestals even though I think they are grossly overpriced. Originally I had wanted to stack them and then have hubby install a deep sink in there for me… but I was too short to comfortably reach/see the controls of the dryer and then the washer would be way low with a lot of stooping. I played around with pretending to reach into the washer (and dryer) at the stores with them not on pedestals and it was just going to get old…. The nice thing of no pedestals is I could have bought the topper and used the top of the washer/dryer set as a table of sorts. I didn’t bother buying that cuz with them on the pedestals it’s too high for short me to use it for anything other than storage and we bought brand new cupboards to go over the stop for that!
Of course, you may have guessed from the new cupboards comment that it isn’t as simple as just buying them and having them delivered/installed. I wondered, since we were putting in pretty, new appliances if we shouldn’t go ahead and tile/paint in there. So we’ve been looking at the tile stores and bringing home samples and I have a bizzilion paint chips in sooooo many different color families (blues, yellows, greens, and reds… yes… red!)
We’ve gone all over the place with tile, too. At first we were bringing home whitish ones…. but then decided we needed more POP! on the floor (it actually goes back further…. originally I was going to buy red, then silver, now white appliances because the first two really limited the colors I could use in flooring and paint! White afforded the most versatility!) Right now, with the tiles we have at home it’s narrowed down to a slate-ish colors tile for which i have a mauvey reddish color picked out that compliments it nicely… but it’s not what i was envisioning…
We also have a gorgeous and very dramatic black and silver tile that really fits the style of the machine, complementing the chrome door ring really nicely. It is also reflective, as you can see in the pic (but it’s not slick or slippery!) So it will pick up the color of the wall, but also the appliances in the room…. We put it down in front of the machine in the store and I just LOVE it! At home…. hubby worries he’ll get sick of looking at it (especially since I’m/we’re leaning toward red walls.)
I did start wondering last night if we need to go in a different direction with the walls since I really love that tile!? I do think we need to go brighter red rather then deeper/darker red if we stay in that direction.
I also want a half glass door for that room. I thought it would be nice and add more light. Unfortunately it’s only a 30″ door and Lowe’s didn’t have any. I’m still on a hunt for a half light door with blind… if I dont find one I’ll have to settle for just a plain old door *pout*.
I already said I’m also getting new cupboards. The ones we currently have in there are old (again…. 13 years old) and very plain. And they are shallow. The new ones are deeper, made to go over a washer/dryer set and they are also taller with an adjustable shelve inside. So I’ll have more storage room! (Plus the storage in the pedestal…. I’ll have more room than I know what to do with!!!!) The cupboards are white and staying that color (we need all the white of them, the appliances, and the door to brighten up the color/dark color!)
I haven’t vocalized this yet… but now I need a new freezer! The one in there is… you guessed it…. 13 years old and not nice and modern like my new wahser and dryer! lol!
(And we’ve already been researching tankless water heaters to get that bohemoth out of there as well as saving energy!)
Phew!
HAPPY NEW YEAR!

Hi Caligurl! We love our HiEf washer/dryer. Ryan helps me put the clothes in and likes to push the buttons. He’s afraid of noisy things and these are so much quieter. It’s surprising how little water is added in the washer… you wonder how the clothes get clean. I agree that the pedestals are a rip-off. We got them but a friend of ours made his own platforms with drawers, etc… You sound like you have a big project ahead of you! Will look forward to seeing how it progresses! Where’s that TGIF smilie!?!
PS. I’m so excited about the next Survivor. They did an awesome job of casting!!!

Hi Caligurl! Yes, the desert can be especially hazardous in the rain. Glad you made it home safely. I think we’re in for a lot more with El Nino! Boo! (((Hugz)))

Hi Caligurl, so much rain! I don’t know of you know I lost my sweet Reina after Christmas. I made her a tribute page and it is linked at my blog. Stay safe in the rain.

Hi Caligurl! Just checking in on you to see what’s new. How are things progressing with the laundry room? I like the idea of a tankless water heater. (((Hugz)))
